CICE

(Vitoria Gasteiz - Spain)

CIC energiGUNE (CICe) is a non-profit energy research centre located in Basque Country, Spain. CICe focuses on materials and systems for energy storage and thermal management. This is achieved by combining interdisciplinary teams working towards high-impact research and technology transfer to industry.

CICe is a member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance whose main aim is to create synergies and boost the innovation potential of the Region.
CICe objectives are strongly aligned with the Basque Country RIS3 priorities and the Energibasque Strategy, and moreover the centre has the backing of public institutions/administrations and of companies directly related to the energy sector. Since its inauguration in 2011, CICe counts with a research team of 100+ researchers and it has achieved: 31 European projects (7 of them as Coordinator), 42 private funded projects, 19 patents granted, published or in process, more than 574 publications in high impact factor journals and launched its first start-up named BCARE.

CICe is active member of many relevant EU initiatives contributing to define the strategic plans and research agendas such us EMIRI (Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative), EERA (European Energy Research Alliance), Spire (Sustainable Process Industry through Resource and Energy Efficiency), etc. With the aim of providing disruptive industrial solutions CICe Thermal Energy Storage (TES) team, the one directly involved in this project, focuses its activity on 3 main applications: i) power generation, ii) energy efficiency for industrial processes and iii) thermal management. TES team has developed a deep knowledge in materials and tools for thermal energy storage and management, involving solutions comprising sensible, latent or thermochemical materials, and through a solid expertise on the use of fluidynamic and systems modelling tools, which become essential tools to understand the thermophysical phenomena behind the heat exchange processes.
